350 h.p. Diesel Electric Shunter

These locomotives have been designed by British Railways and built at Derby, Crewe, Horwich, Doncaster and Darlington works. Large numbers of these engines are in service with all regions of British Railways, the earlier ones being black, and the later ones, which are still being delivered, are painted Brunswick green. The controls are duplicated on either side of the cab, and consist of reverser and controller handles, which are interlocked to prevent faulty operation. A dead man's pedal device prevents power being supplied to the locomotive unless the pedal is depressed, but a short delayed action enables the driver to cross the cab to the opposite position before the device operates. The comfort in these locomotives is far in excess of their steam counterparts, for the cabs are totally enclosed and are heated by tubular radiators taking hot water from the engine cooling system. An adjustable upholstered stool is provided each side for the driver and an electric food warmer is also fitted for his use. The driving wheels are 4 ft. 6 in. in diameter and the weight in working order is 49 tons. Although the maximum speed of this locomotive is only 20 miles per hour, which is quite sufficient for shunting duties, its maximum tractive effort is 35,000 lbs. which is greater than many larger steam locomotives. The fuel tanks of these engines carry 668 gallons which is sufficient for 10 to 15 days shunting work before refuelling again.
